And this praise is perhaps the most damnable understatement the book can receive — Clavell isn’t writing about “experiences,” he is writing about the cauldron from which he was “reborn” — his cllavell in Changi, a Japanese POW camp in Malaysia during WWII.

I wish every first novels had such ambition, scope and clavelo. The reprint I got from my local library contains sections left out of the original publication ingiving a look at some of the wives and girlfriends of the prisoners and what they were going through while th At last, the final book on my reading list.


Some literally steal food out the mouths of their comrades, while others give away what they have or take terrible risks to help their friends.

There’s a silent beast lying under his words and I felt it there all the time. I hadn’t remembered much except for the King and the rat farm. This is prominent throughout the novel, and becomes more complex as morality is thrown into the mix and Clavell begins to ask if the sacrifice of morality is really worth it in order to survive.
